Fusion energy has been an elusive, clean-energy dream for years. Now, it could play a new role in modern warfare.
Fusion startup Xcimer Energy is working with aerospace and defense company RTX to develop pulsed laser weapons to shoot down drone swarms, missiles or other threats.
The companies have a roughly $50 million development agreement that includes an investment by RTX into the Denver-based startup. Xcimer is working on a gas-laser fusion system that in many ways harks back to a Cold War-era technology program.
